SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

For tendons that
will not settle.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is used for chronic tendon, ligament and calcific conditions. Non-invasive, and no anaesthesia is needed.

Conditions it is used for

  • Plantar fasciitis — heel pain with the first steps of the morning
  • Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder
  • Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Rotator cuff problems
  • Chronic muscle and soft-tissue pain

Two types of device

Focused (Dornier, Germany)

Energy is concentrated at depth, used where the target tissue sits further below the surface.

Radial (Storz, Germany)

Energy spreads across a wider area, used for more superficial and broader targets.

Which is appropriate depends on the site and the tissue, and is decided at the examination.

How treatment runs

One region per session as a rule, usually once a week for the same region, with the response reviewed over a course of up to about six sessions. The number of sessions is not fixed in advance for everyone.

FAQ

Common questions

Does it hurt?

There is a strong tapping sensation and some discomfort during treatment, which stops when the session ends. No anaesthesia is used.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies by condition and by response. We reassess as the course goes on rather than selling a fixed package.

Can I walk and travel afterwards?

Yes. Most people continue their day normally. Some tenderness at the treated site for a day or two is common.

Will the calcium deposit disappear immediately?

Not necessarily, and no one can promise that. Pain, function and imaging findings are reviewed together to judge the response.
